Child custody dispute between Usher and ex-wife rages on

According to reports, the child custody battle between Usher and his ex-wife, Tameka Foster, has only grown uglier since the pair's divorce became official in 2009. Apparently, the former couple currently shares custody of their two children, but Foster has petitioned the court for full custody while Usher has asked for more time with the two boys.

It was reported that a family court judge ordered the two to work out a temporary custody arrangement earlier this month through private mediation, but it appears that no agreement has been reached as of yet. At the hearing, Foster denied threatening to kill the 33-year-old pop sensation, but admitted under oath to threatening him to some extent using profanities.

Pug-beagle mix at center of expensive custody fight

As we have discussed in the past, pet custody cases are on the rise in New Jersey and the rest of the United States. Evidently, some pet owners are so deeply attached to their furry companions that they are willing to fork over big bucks in custody battles.

For example, one New York man said he has spent about $30,000 in legal fees trying to regain custody of Knuckles, his pug-beagle mix.

The man's girlfriend reportedly took the dog with her when she moved to Southern California. The man, who said Knuckles is like son to him, is doing everything in his power to get the dog back and has even set up a web site where people can donate money to support his efforts. He said he is willing to go $60,000 in debt if it means getting Knuckles back.

Kardashian wants Humphries to quit stalling divorce proceeding

The world watched when reality TV star Kim Kardashian married New Jersey Nets player Kris Humphries in an elaborate televised wedding ceremony last year. Unfortunately, like many celebrity marriages, their nuptials were short lived. Kardashian filed for divorce on Oct. 31, after being married for only 72 days.

Divorce can be a complicated legal process. Despite their celebrity status, Kardashian and Humphries are not exempt from those complications. Currently, the estranged couple is engaged in a heated court battle to determine whether the marriage will be annulled due to fraud or dissolved through traditional divorce proceedings.

Supermodel, fashion mogul settle child support dispute

Recently, we wrote about a child support case involving more money than most parents in New Jersey could even imagine being asked to pay. Supermodel Linda Evangelista asked a family court for a reported $46,000 per month in child support from French billionaire Francois-Henri Pinault, the father of her 5-year-old son.

The case went to trial last week, but it was reported yesterday that a settlement had been reached. No details were released, but an attorney for Pinault said that both parties were relieved that the lawsuit had come to an end. The settlement agreement was to be given to a judge today for approval.

Life insurance: An important issue often overlooked in divorce

Life insurance is typically something couples purchase as a way to protect their family while the family is intact. However, insurance should also be considered in the event of divorce. Here's why: Let's say a couple splits after several years of marriage and one spouse depends on the other for spousal support and/or child support.

If the paying spouse were to die without life insurance, the spousal support and child support would both end. The same is true with regard to disability. If the paying spouse were to become disabled and could no longer work, spousal support and child support obligations would end just the same.

Supermodel asks for hefty child support from billionaire CEO

In 2005, a famous supermodel and the CEO of a Paris-based fashion conglomerate engaged in a four-month affair during which the supermodel became pregnant. The child, who is now 5-years-old, is currently at the center of a child support dispute that is making headlines.

Perhaps it's because the mom, Linda Evangelista, is asking for a reported $46,000 per month to cover expenses ranging from a 24-hour nanny to a chauffeur who is a former detective. The dad, French billionaire Francois-Henri Pinault has disputed the amount sought by Evangelista and is expected to testify in court on Thursday.

How to keep your finances in order during divorce (1 of 2)

As a recent article from the Huffington Post pointed out, going through a divorce can be both emotionally and finically draining on a person. For many people, a divorce is a time of financial uncertainty and it can feel like the bills keep piling up.

However, there are several ways in which a person can make the divorce process as financially pain-free as possible. Here are several tips from the Huffington Post article on how to do that:

In alimony and taxes, errors can be costly (2 of 2)

We are currently discussing the case of a major league baseball pitcher who ran into trouble with the IRS after deducting "alimony" payments from his tax returns.

To sum up what happened: the baseball player and his wife entered a postnuptial agreement in which he agreed to pay her a settlement he was entitled to stemming from arbitration between the Major League Baseball owners and the players. In exchange, the wife waived her right to alimony.

After the couple had separated, the baseball player was paid $294,749 in 2002 and $385,964 in 2004 from the MLB settlement. Because a court upheld the validity of the postnuptial agreement, he paid each amount to his wife in full. Considering the payments alimony, the baseball player deducted the payments from his 2002 and 2004 tax returns.
